My First String Quartet
I have just finished my first string quartet and I believe it is one of my best works so far. My goal for this piece was to challenge the players with extended techniques, and reach a total time of 30-40 minutes. I accomplished both of these goals.
In the second movement I experimented with a new scale I found on https://ianring.com/musictheory/scales/ (one of my favorite websites)! This scale, known as scale 0,1,3,4,6,7,t,e, has many unusual properties that I was able to exploit. For example: the tonic chord can be major, minor, diminished, or lydian, and the dominant chord can not be spelled fully. Also, every note in the scale can move to at least one other note by a half step.
This piece has helped me further my understanding of stringed instruments and I hope to get it performed soon. I also look forward to working with more odd scales in my future compositions!
